IMI – 2nd Call for Research Proposals Published – 8 Feb. 2010 as Deadline
The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has officially launched a second call for proposals with a total funding of €156.3 million out of which, €76.8 million will be provided by the European Commission and €79.5 million expected to be provided in kind from EFPIA member companies.
Emanated from and funded by the public-private partnership between the European Commission and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry and Associations (EFPIA), IMI officially became autonomous on 16 November 2009. Building on its success, IMI also appointed Dr. Michel Goldman as its Executive Director. IMI intends to speed up the discovery and development of new medicines in the field of cancer, inflammatory and infectious disease.
There are 9 topics of research for this second IMI call for proposals. These have been addressed as follows:
1. Imaging biomarkers for anticancer drug development.
2. New tools for target validation to improve drug efficacy (oncology).
3. Molecular biomarkers: accelerating cancer therapy development and refining
patient care.
4. Identification and development of rapid point of care diagnostic tests for
bacterial diagnosis to facilitate conduct of clinical trials and clinical practice.
5. Understanding aberrant adaptive immunity mechanisms.
6. Translational research in chronic immune-mediated disease: bridging between
animal models and humans.
7. Drug/disease modelling: library & framework.
8. Open pharmacological space.
9. Electronic Health Records (EHR).
The deadline to submit proposals is 8 February 2010 and final results will be revealed in mid-2010.

Background
The aim of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is to restore European leadership in R&D investments and boost the competitiveness of European life science R&D by directly addressing the challenges facing the biopharmaceutical sector in Europe. IMI foster early prediction of success or failure in drug development.
IMI is a pan-European collaboration that brings together large biopharmaceutical companies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), patient organisations, academia, hospitals and public authorities.
The IMI agenda identifies the principal research bottlenecks in the biopharmaceutical R&D process and sets forth recommendations to overcome these bottlenecks by focusing on four areas: Predicting safety, Predicting efficacy, Knowledge management and Education and training
